Landscapes

Works

Jules-Elie Delaunay was a life-long practitioner of the landscape. From his beginnings in Nantes through his stays in Brittany and Italy, he brought enormous sensitivity to his portrayals of the places he visited. His attention to detail, taste for contrast and the nuances of light, and meticulous use of line and colour reached their high point in his handling of landscape.

Pencil in hand, addressing his ideas as scrupulously as he addressed nature, Delaunay was ever the free, bold, resolute artist. This will become clear when his drawings are given their place in our museums beside those of the best draughtsmen of all times.
